Your dog's name: Tyrone

Your location: Los Angeles, CA

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? Buying one simply didn’t feel right. I felt drawn to adopting a pup. I learned more about the adoption process and benefits (saving 2 lives by adopting 1) through a very influential friend of mine and it sealed in my decision.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? It’s kind of a long story but we were told adopting in LA during a pandemic would take 4-6 months because of the influx of applications and also because they actually match dogs with proper homes for them. So, we were starting the process. I had applied for a young adult female pitty through an agency and they reached out saying that particular pup was in Phase 2 (of 3) of her adoption process. (Yay!) But they JUST found a dog, literally the day prior, in Bakersfield and if we were open to a big dog, it might be a good fit for us. So, after lots of back and forth texts and pics and videos and testing him with other dogs of all sizes, cats, kids, we were already attached to him and already had a name picked out. Also, noteworthy, we had JUST moved into our new apartment and we still had crates everywhere but were alllllmost done unpacking. Needless to say, within 4 days, Tyrone (then Popsicle) was transported down to LA, vetted and scheduled for his neuter, did a meet and greet with us (that was profound, but I’ll save that for another day), and logistics planned for us to take him home. 4-6 months WHERE?!

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. He was found chained up in the desert in Bakersfield.

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? We’d sleep in, he’d come with us for brunch somewhere and he’d have some treats and collect pets. We’d go on an adventure. Maybe out for a looooong walk or maybe a trip to the beach. We’d head home (maybe pick up his first pupuccino on the way!) and dinner for all three of us. Some chill time on the balcony and then bed.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I’d tell him that he’s safe and the actual best boy and the non-human love of my life, and also can he please just sort of maybe manage a LITTLE of his slobber?! Seriously.

What would be your dog's theme song? “Tyrone” by Erykah Badu, obviously.

How does your pup make your life better? We laugh daily because of him. Multiple times. It’s only been 6 months with him, but he already helps me manage anxiety and keeps me grounded.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? It is not for the faint of heart, but it is equally just as rewarding. If you have the time, patience, and willingness to learn how to heal a dog and retrain them from survival to thriving, it’s the best thing you can do.

Anything else we should know? Tyrone has ALL of the personality and he wants to love and be loved by everybody, human or not. He is authentically one of the best pitbull (mix) representatives I’ve ever seen and the best example of why they make such wonderful family members. I really hope the country continues to reform their outdated and irrational pitbull breed laws and retire the stigmas. They really just are not factual. Also, we have an Instagram for him if you’d like to see all that personality I mentioned: @ohhiimty (Oh, hi! I’m Ty.)

Your dog's name: Gizmo Michael

Your location: Buffalo, NY

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? My family has always adopted at the SPCA and knew there were beautiful great dogs sitting in a kennel. We were taught to treat our dogs like you would a person.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? Before I was 100% aware of rescues, we looked on Craigslist. At the time, we had a Newfie from SPCA and a Rottie we took from a bad spot. My sister had two pit bulls, and I fell in love with them. My sister was looking at a dog, and was on her way to go when I came home and asked to go with - they turned out to be too big and they were in horrible conditions. I got up to leave and the owner kicked one of the dogs! I paid $400 to take him. He was only 4 lbs and clinging to life. I knew I was his only chance to live.

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? He is an awesome foster brother now and loves to play with puppies, we would also have a nice variety of snacks and walks in nature to sniff EVERYTHING.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? That he taught me patience, love, and a bond I will truly cherish forever.

What would be your dog's theme song? Any techno song! He’s always a 10 - haha!

How does your pup make your life better? How doesn’t he? He gets me up and moving and healthy he has a special diet and so I do it now - haha! He is a goober and makes me laugh. He’s def recognized some bad people in my life. I have trusted him and he was right!

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Every dog is different and can take time and training. Our boy is 9 and we still have training to do - but the bond you form and how you see them trust and become grateful for you, is truly priceless.

Anything else we should know? He truly is a gentle pit.

Your dog's name: Kenya

Your location: San Diego, CA

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? I learned about adoption late in life, and then about Pit Bulls. I knew I wanted to adopt from then on.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? I had Kenya (aka McKenna) saved on Petfinder for years. I was waiting to adopt a Pit Bull until I had an apartment that would allow it. When I met my now husband and we had been together about a year, we discussed adopting a Pit Bull. Kenya was STILL on Petfinder, so I asked him if we could go meet her. We fell in love instantly. We found out later she had been adopted and returned four or so times and had a bad fear of strangers - she never showed that fear towards us. It was like she chose us right back. She has now been with us 6 years, when she had never in her life had a home for more than 1 or 2.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter your dog came from. The Barking Lot

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Kenya would ride in the car all day. We don’t even have to go anywhere, just drive around. Then get a Puppachino and play chase with a tennis ball.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? That she is the most special being and that we are so happy she picked us to be her family.

What would be your dog's theme song? “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (she is soooo clingy)

How does your pup make your life better? She makes us laugh every day.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? It is worth every challenge to know that you are responsible for giving a dog in need the very best chance.

https://ecigsforabetterlife.com/blogs/news/gennie-nala-i-truly-feel-like-we-re-making-a-difference 2020-12-16T13:01:13-07:00 2023-07-07T01:43:56-06:00 Gennie & Nala: I Truly Feel Like We’re Making a Difference Ashley Wilke Your name: Gennie

Your dog's name: Nala

Your location: St. Louis, MO

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? We always knew we would rescue when the time was right, however I had never grown up around pit bulls and was honestly apprehensive. I’m forever grateful I was open minded during the adoption process, because Nala has changed my life in so many ways.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? A family friend runs a small foster-based rescue here in St. Louis. When we saw Nala’s photos on Facebook we knew we had to set up an appointment to meet her. I guess you could say it was love at first sight.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. 4 Paws 4 Rescue - St. Louis

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Nala likes to start her mornings by snuggling under the covers with me until it’s time to get up. She loves sitting in chairs like a human, so I think our ideal day would be relaxing on a patio together and enjoying the weather.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell her I love her more than I could ever put into words and that she’s been everything I could have hoped for and more. My hiking buddy, my goof ball, my weighted blanket. Life is better with her in it, and I’d want her to know that.

What would be your dog's theme song? It would have to be Hakuna Matata, because Nala truly has no worries.

How does your pup make your life better? As someone who struggles with intense and sometimes crippling anxiety, Nala has a way of knowing exactly when I need her by my side. Her presence by my side (or in my lap) is anchoring and always exactly what I need.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? There is truly no love like that of a rescue dog’s. If you have the means to open up your heart and home to a rescue (especially a pittie), you will love and laugh harder then you ever have.

Anything else we should know? I want to say that when you rescue a dog (particularly a pittie) you become a sort of ambassador for the breed. I’ve watched so many friends and family fall in love with this breed of dog, simply by getting to spend time with Nala. I truly feel like we’re making a difference and tearing down stigmas one person at a time.

Your dog's name: Nova

Your location: North Palm Beach, Florida

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? My Brother rescued his first dog (a Pittie) too and I knew it was the only way to go. The Pittie (Boldin) had the best personality and I knew rescuing would be the only way.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? I was looking for a pitbull puppy for 4 months, I actually went into a local shelter and put a dog on hold the dog was heartworm positive and had to wait another week on medications, but the dog got adopted out the day before I was going to get him, I was told they tried to contact me but unfortunately I was at work and couldn't answer until after work. I was sad about at first, but it made me so happy to know that he got a great home and it led me to go on Adopt a Pet the next day and that's when I found Nova formally (Skye) online and I knew she was the one. I went to see her at her fosters house that weekend and it took me .2 seconds to stay I was taking her home.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. Good Karma Pet Rescue (In Fort Lauderdale, Florida)

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? If we had an entire day to do fun things together, We would start out by going to our favorite breakfast spot (Hurricane Cafe, They are very dog friendly and he always gets a side order of chicken sausage), Then We would head to the beach we have a local dog beach that dogs are allowed off leash, After the dog beach we would head to our local dog bar called Bark Republic that allows dogs to go and play while there humans can relax watching Sunday football.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell Nova that she is everything I have ever wanted in a dog. I have wanted a dog my whole life and (due to playing travel sports) never was home enough on the weekends for my parents to get one. Nova you are the perfect amount of adorable, the perfect amount of spunk and you keep life so fun and full of energy. Nova you are always smiling and ready to come socialize with everyone and break breed barriers to make every human you meet fall in love with pitbull breeds.

What would be your dog's theme song? I think Nova’s theme song would be "Dancing in the Moonlight" because she always in a happy upbeat mood like the song is and she always gets the zoomies as soon as the sun goes down and the moon comes out it always makes me think she is "dancing in the moonlight" but the dog version (zoomies).

How does your pup make your life better? She makes my life better by always wanting to come with me everywhere I go. Nova is always so well behaved in public it makes bringing her with me everywhere so easy so I can spend as much of her life with her as I can.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? I want everyone to know that rescuing a dog is the best choice that you make your own life. Rescue dogs come with their quirks and it will always be a learning experience when you get a new dog, but rescue dogs always have the most heart to share and are so forgiving to their previous lives. My dog was found in a dumpster and if you looked at her today and her sweet personality you would never think she would forgive humans, but she loves nothing more than attention and love from humans.

Your dog's name: Alice

Your location: Virginia

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? I have always had rescue dogs. The thought of all the dogs without homes is heart breaking.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? I was going to PetCo for guinea pig supplies and they were having an unexpected adoption event with a small rescue in my area. We already had a rescue pit, Flint, and had no plans to rescue another. However, as soon as I walked in I spotted this little chubby puppy that was all alone with no one around it. I walked up to say hi and immediately got kisses from her. She was peeing all over (due to an untreated UTI) and I just couldn’t walk away. My husband, at the time boyfriend, wasn’t convinced but I just knew she would be coming home with us. I asked the volunteers what her name was and no one knew. I just knew I had to get her out of there. Luckily, we had Flint with us so we had them introduced and they did well. Needless to say, she came home with us!

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Alice LOVES fetch so we would probably spend a good 5 hours just playing fetch. Then we would get some ice cream, because my little lady loves to eat! We would end the day cuddled up together napping

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell her how much I love her and how thankful I am that she was brought to me. I would ask her what I could do to make her even happier, because I would do anything for my beautiful girl!

What would be your dog's theme song? Sheryl Crow - Here Comes the Sun

How does your pup make your life better? Alice literally is my soul mate. This dog has saved me when my mental health is seriously struggling. She is by my side through all of my chronic illness ups and downs. I could not imagine two souls being more intertwined.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Don’t get a dog unless you are prepared to commit 15 years to it. Dogs are the most wonderful gifts from the universe, but they take a lot of hard work.

https://ecigsforabetterlife.com/blogs/news/alison-and-guera-i-want-the-world-to-not-be-afraid-of-adopting-an-older-dog 2020-12-09T13:13:43-07:00 2023-07-07T01:43:53-06:00 Alison and Guera: I Want the World to Not be Afraid of Adopting an Older Dog Ashley Wilke Your name: Alison

Your dog's name: Guera

Your location: Clayton, California

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? Guera was owned by a co-worker who had to move and couldn’t find a home for Guera. She was surrendered to the shelter, who told them she would be out down in three weeks since she was 11 years old and had cancer. I saw pictures of her and heard about how she helped raise four kids, and I couldn’t let her die in a shelter. I adopted her on the 18th day. She wasn’t even listed on their website and didn’t even have identification or a profile. They were just holding her for the minimum they had to before she was out down.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? My co-worker shared her story and pictures. He be found her in a junk yard as a small puppy. He talked about how she loved being around their children and even slept in the cribs of his children when they were infants. I just felt pulled to her heart. She gave her life for these four children and didn’t deserve to die in a shelter without a family.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. Oakland

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? I would love to hike with her. She’s a snooper who snorts and sniffs around. But she is now 14 so the most she can hike is a mile. Her ideal day is watching movies on the couch or in bed, with the occasional nap in the sun. And snacks!

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell her that she is so loved and she’s my best friend. I adopted her when she was 11 years old and it’s now been three years. I know our time is short, but I promise to make her last few years the best they can be.

What would be your dog's theme song? That’s a good question! Guera is bilingual and responds to commands in both English and Spanish. Maybe “Despacito” since she needs to slow down when she’s eating!

How does your pup make your life better? She’s equally loving and equally silly. Even on the worst days she makes me laugh and makes me feel like someone has my back.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? I want the world to not be afraid of adopting an older dog. Your time with them may be short, but it’s still a magical partnership to take a dog into your home. I feel honored to have the responsibility to care for my dog during the last few years of her life. She has so many stories and I am lucky it ends with me.

Anything else we should know? I really appreciate your work advocating for pit bulls. Guera is my first pit bull and I’m hooked. She’s changed the minds of so many people who were originally skeptical of pit bulls. It just takes one and I feel that’s their magic!

Your dog's name: Fiona Rose

Your location: Derry, NH

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? It was unintentional. At the time we weren’t sure if we would rescue or not when we were ready to get a dog. It’s the best decision we’ve ever made and I’ll never not rescue from now on.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? My husband had come across a post of Fiona on Facebook and felt the need to show me as he typically did when he found a cute dog up for adoption. I always said no to getting a dog because we live in an apartment and we had very busy social lives at the time. There was just something about her, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. She was randomly popping in and out of my brain all day and all night. We went to bed that night and I woke up thinking about her! I hadn’t done that with any other dog we had come across. I just had to meet her.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. East Windsor CT

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? I would take her everywhere she’s never been before so she could explore everything. The beach, the mountains, the city. And of course I’ll pack her favorite snacks, peanut butter and watermelon!

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell Fiona how grateful and lucky I am to have her. She’s completely changed my outlook on having a dog and I don’t regret anything. My love for her is so strong and that’s why I give her as many hugs and kisses as I can everyday. She’s my best friend.

What would be your dog's theme song? Joan Jett - Bad Reputation

How does your pup make your life better? She makes me smile everyday, whether it’s being silly playing with her toys or adorably curled up sleeping on the couch, she melts my heart. Just knowing she’s always here with me truly helps me through everyday life.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Rescuing Fiona was not all sunshine and rainbows. It has been one of the most difficult things my husband and I have ever been through together. I just want people to understand the amount of work and patience you may need to have when rescuing, especially a dog with zero background information, like Fiona.

Anything else we should know? The day I met Fiona she was wild with energy! I was skeptical at first but then she let me give her scratchies and wouldn’t let me stop. She was found roaming the streets and was brought to a very small shelter in CT. She had a collar with no tags and microchipped but not registered to anyone. She was in the shelter for a month and no one called for her. All we know about her is that she was microchipped in October 2015. There were only two girls running the shelter at the time and could only be there a few hours a day because they were both also in law enforcement. Fiona was alone for about 20 hours a day for a month. She had no manners or training, she barely knew sit. A few weeks after we brought Fiona home she went into heat. My wild dog just got more wild. 6 weeks had gone by and I was getting closer to being in the clear to get her spayed. Fiona’s body had a different plan, she went straight into a false pregnancy! Thankfully it was mild but still not how we thought getting out first dog would go. We had to do private training classes with her because she’s unfortunately animal aggressive. She also was not so great when meeting new people. These issues have still yet to be resolved but I’m so proud of how far she’s come. We’re still trying to work with her on many things but she’s really a great dog in so many different ways. Fiona is such a sweet girl and an amazing snuggler with so much love to give! She lets me do just about anything to her, including dressing her up for photoshoots. I swear she secretly loves it! She can be quite the character at times, very goofy but hardly graceful. She’s constantly tripping up the stairs or getting herself stuck in a blanket. I often refer to her as a sour patch kid because of their commercials, she can do something so sassy but then 10 minutes later we’re snuggling on the couch and I’m telling her what a good girl she is. I wouldn’t trade her for the world. One of the pictures I’m submitting is her original adoption posting.

Your dog's name: Nash

Your location: Truckee, CA

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? I've always wanted to help those in the shelter rather that buy. I got my parents to rescue before I even got my own dog.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? I volunteered at our local shelter for a long time. My now husband and I were continually looking online at the animals and started to meet specific ones when we knew it was time for a dog of our own. We had met a few, but none quite clicked yet. My brother and sister-in-law were in town and asked to visit the shelter to help us pick. There was a new dog I had recently seen on the website that I wanted to meet so we went there after lunch. Upon first meeting Nash, then named Scooby, he just sat right in our laps and just wanted love. My husband was working at the time so we told him to meet us at the shelter when he got off work. When we arrived to meet him, Nash was sitting in his lap as well. We were sold right away.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Definitely some lazy time and then some exercise. If it's summer, a nice hike where Nash can swim because it's his favorite. Or if it's winter, typically a walk around the neighborhood. As long as he's coming with, he really doesn't care what we do.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I love you, you're my best friend, and I would ask if he understands everything I say.

What would be your dog's theme song? This is a shockingly difficult question. Anything that shows that he's a big loving goofball.

How does your pup make your life better? Just being there for me. My husband was gone for 6 months and Nash was my emotional support animal, literally. I can't imagine my life without him next to me.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Just because they are in a shelter does not make them a bad dog. We adopted Nash at 1 1/2 years old and were able to still fully train him and help him adjust into our lives. Rescuing is totally worth it, you just have to find your match.

Anything else we should know? Nash loves every creature he meets and always comes up with his goofy smile. His smile has definitely scared some since it looks like a growl but they learn quickly that he's excited and smiling. Also, Nash hates the camera so all of our photos of him are usually from interesting angles.

Your dog's name: Zoey

Your location: California

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? Happened by chance! But rescues only from now on!

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? My boyfriend stopped for gas in Los Angeles late at night 9 years ago. He had zero intention of getting a dog, but a man approached him at the gas station and pulled a puppy out of his pocket and he knew couldn’t leave without a that dog. The vet confirmed she was only 5 weeks old at the time but she’s now thriving and is the most gentle pit!

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Run around in an open, grassy field for a few hours, followed by a long couch cuddle session.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? She’s the most beautiful girl and she makes this world a better place!

What would be your dog's theme song? Lizzo - good as hell

How does your pup make your life better? She KNOWS when I’m having a bad day and she’s the first one to try and lift my spirits!

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Rescue dogs want to be loved so deeply that the love they’ll show you is unparalleled.

Your dog's name: Packer and Duke

Your location: Shavertown Pennsylvania

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? Buying a dog has never occurred to me we did not start getting dogs in our family until I was about eight or 10 years old even then they were free from neighbors and as I grew older I understood the importance of utilizing my local shelters Petfinder and our Humane Society and SPCA to seek out the best dog that suits our family I don’t know if I had ever even considered “purchasing a dog” I can certainly find all the love I need in a dog at a shelter or rescue.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? I had a family dog that lived until he was 18 years old he was the first dog that we had ever had and when I was a young adult he left the house and moved in with my husband and I along with my other dog Bradley at the time. When my old timer passed away I was so upset the pain was like nothing I had ever experienced or expected to experience, so it took quite some time for my heart to heal. It was about two years later when I really remember telling my husband I think I’m ready to start looking for a dog so we immediately went on Petfinder and began our search we had expressed interest in two dogs one tan and white and the other was black- it was in a rescue just outside of the Philadelphia area which is only about two hours away from us. We had called to inquire about the dogs and they said that the white and tan dog was already adopted but the black dog was still available so we decided immediately that we needed to have this dog so we got in the car a few days later and went to go meet our Duke for the very first time. he is a pit mix and is the absolute most perfect dog that we could have ever asked for! he’s very intuitive he needed no formal training, he is just perfect a once in a lifetime dog is the way I like to say it! This was the first time that my husband and I fully understood that black dogs do get overlooked and left behind in the shelter . A few years later we rescued another dog-we first met him when our family was hosting an annual charity day at a rescue near our home and there was a litter of dogs that had come in they were thrown in a garbage bag over the side of a cliff when they were only a few hours old. They were brought to the shelter without a mom and so cold that ticks and maggots were abandoning them and jumping onto the rescuers instead . everyone of those dogs survived and when I met that dog the biggest one in the litter I said to my husband that’s our dog and he’s going to come home with us ...so five weeks later and after multiple visits to the rescue in the meantime we brought him home. It has not been the easiest Journey but it is one that is definitely worth experiencing.. Packer has needed extensive training to overcome some obstacles that I’m sure were lacking because he did not have a mom- as good as we are as humans we cannot replace that maternal teachings that a mama dog offers to her pups . But with guidance and a great trainer and a lot of patients packer has given us such joy in our lives he really is a good dog. Hes very smart he’s very well trained , he knows commands in three different languages , he’s very well adapted at this point I’m a firm believer that every dog will find the right family and I’m confident that both Duke and Packer have found the right family with us.

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Duke would swim in the ocean with his dad all day and Packer would play fetch with his Kong endlessly.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would want all of my dogs to know that every dog that I spend my life with I learn more each time. I learn more about myself , I learn more about how to properly care and how to properly train and how to properly advocate for animals. So I would hope that my dogs would understand that my shortcomings that they may have experienced were never for the lack of love or for the lack of effort, I am always doing the best I can. Each one of my pets helps me grow and understand more each and every day so I would hope that they knew that I loved them to the ends of the earth and back and I would hope that they would forgive me for anything that I should’ve done better. And that their legacy and stories and memories will provide me with comfort and joy until the day I leave this earth each and everyone of them.

What would be your dog's theme song? Packers theme song would be Bet Midler’ Blueberry from a Sesame Street soundtrack because he loves to eat frozen blueberries and I’m not really sure what Duke’s theme song would be my husband would probably be the best suited to answer that question so TBA.

How does your pup make your life better? Dogs really do you have an amazing compassion when it comes to forgiving and truly loving and Leslie they know how to be intuitive to pick out the good people in the world and there have been days when I have felt such darkness and I have experienced such heavy loss and my dogs are equally there for me to support me as on the days that I have celebrated and rejoiced so though I have may have thought absolutely alone in the world so long as I have had pause in my household I have never been alone in one day that may sound cliché but it is true and I’m sure that there are studies out there that prove that having pets and dogs in your life definitely as long to have pets in your life as longevity and I truly do believe that allowing yourself to fully love and advocate for someone or some thing in your life really is rewarding and that is what my dogs allow me to do is feel rewarded by simply just loving them.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? We are all wounded, we have all felt abandoned at some point in our life and I’m sure we have celebrated the day when somebody took a chance on us or saw something special in us picked us out from the crowd. I think that that is a very similar situation when dogs sit in shelters or rescues. Waiting to be picked from the crowd . We can identify with them in those moments and I think every living being in this world deserves a second chance humans and animals alike. We don’t always get the best opportunities to shine in the beginning but that does not mean that we should not have the opportunity to try again. When you rescue a dog or any pet, you give them an opportunity to love again, to be good again, to live their best life! I do think it’s our responsibility as humans, we have domesticated canines to be our pets, so it is our job to make sure that we take care of them and with our help to clear the shelters and advocate for them it’s our job to lift them up never, never to push them down. Regardless of what your resources are you can volunteer you can adopt you can advocate you can donate no effort is too small and I hope that people understand that.

Your dog's name: Griffyn

Your location: Junction City, OR

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? My husband and I had always wanted to rescue because there has always been a huge need in the pitbull community and we had experience with the breed with my mom's pittie, Harley. Our eldest pup, Athena, landed in our lap because our friend had a litter of blue nose pups and Athena was the last to get picked (luckily for us!). We did not buy her but she is the product of backyard breeding and we have seen first hand how poor breeding affects these babies lifelong. Jump to now, at the start of 2020, we were a solid pack of 3 dogs and a feline that swore he was a big dog too. The feline passed away in August, Harley right behind him 10 days later. And our brother's dog, Jeter who had been with us for two and a half years temporarily, went back home (yay, right?!). But that left Thee all by herself and let me tell you that was not an easy few weeks.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? My husband, Jake, saw him on a local rescue's Facebook page. He had this big meaty grin in his picture they posted that we just absolutely fell in love. But at the time he had not yet been fully vetted, so we didn't know much about him so we kind of didn't think much about it until my friend saw his photo on the same rescue's page and was like OMG I need him 💔 so I tagged along with her to go meet him, I fell so fricken hard for this big guy that it killed me to be there knowing he couldn't come home with me. He had come from a shelter in Fresno, CA - on his euthanasia date someone pulled him and brought him to MM, thank goodness!!!! Anyway, my friend has a 2 year old at home and he simply has no clue how big he is and would spend a lot of time knocking the wobbly toddler over. So my friend ended up passing on him! I knew right then it was meant to be. I got my hubby out there to meet him and it was all over from there.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter your dog came from. Many Miles Pet Rescue

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Car ride out to a fun trail for all the sniffs! Puppacinnos, new toys, drive by meet n greets with the family he hasn't gotten to meet. Finished out with disney movies and couch snuggles 🥰

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? You came into our lives at the most imperfectly perfect moment in time. We didn't know how much we needed you, until we had you and we will give you the best life you could ever imagine.

What would be your dog's theme song? Ruff Ryder's Anthem

How does your pup make your life better? I smile so much now that our family is complete. My heart is truly full.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Everything about it is worth it. The love you get from your rescue is unlike any you've ever had. It's pretty incredible.

Your dog's name: Prudence

Your location: South Lake Tahoe, California

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? After my first pitty died of cancer I knew I would always have a pitty in my life. I wanted to give a pup in need the same beautiful life my Stella Blue had. Rescuing seemed like the perfect way to honor Stella’s life. Pay it forward type mentality.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? I was home in South Carolina visiting. My state had just broken up the largest dog fighting ring in our state’s history. A family friend run’s a rescue that was helping place the dogs in homes and asked if I would help walk some of the pups they rescued while I was home. The woman fostering six pups was in a wheel chair from a car accident and still went above and beyond to help these dogs in need. It was my great joy to help her. When I arrived five precious pups ran out of their crate to greet me. One stayed in the back of the crate scared to death of everything. In that moment I knew she would need extra love and extra patience as she overcame her trauma. I wasn’t ready for another pup yet, it had been a little over a year since I lost my first red-nose pitty to cancer. I couldn’t get this scared pup out of my head and heart. I went everyday I was home to work with her. When it came time to head back to California I decided not to fly, rescue Smiley now known as Prudence and we both drove back to California together. Nineish (no idea how old she really was when I adopted her) year later and our love story is still going strong!

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. Pawmetto Lifeline in Columbia, South Carolina

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Hiking around gorgeous Lake Tahoe. Chasing chipmunks out of hiding, demolishing pine cones in our path and of course zoomies in the fresh snow we get an abundance of, in a full snowsuit, of course.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? You are so loved Prudence. You do not let your overwhelming fear stop you from doing the hard things. Your ability to overcome what life threw at you is a constant reminder to me I am strong enough for whatever life sends my way. You have shown me broken is not a bad trait and our brokenness gives us an inner strength unlike any other. My life is better because you trusted me to give you the best life possible when trusting wasn’t in your nature.

What would be your dog's theme song? Dear Prudence, The Beatles. We would sing, “Dear Prudence won’t you come out to play? Dear Prudence, greet the brand new day” when she was too scared to leave her crate when I first adopted her. The song stuck and Smiley became Prudence!

How does your pup make your life better? She shows me how to be resilient. That we can do the hard things. That love is possible even after another human broke your trust and violated your love.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? Rescue pups teach us so many life lessons. So many beautiful dogs end up in shelters, dogs that deserve a chance at happiness no matter their “pre-existing” conditions. Bringing a rescue dog into your life will open your heart up to big, big love!

Your dog's name: Larry & Frank

Your location: Chicago, IL

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? I ran into a friend who worked at shelter and mentioned that I was looking for a dog. She educated me on the number of animals in shelters and adopting vs. shopping and the next week I went to meet dogs!

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? The same friend texted me at 7am on a Friday morning to tell me that a transport of 97 dogs had just arrived. I drove out to the shelter and will never forget walking into their back holding area and seeing 97 dogs squeezed into maybe 25-30 kennels, all barking and jumping. That was the moment that I understood why I had to rescue. I met a few dogs and really connected with one in particular, Jake. Because he had just arrived, they wanted me to foster-to-adopt him but I already knew he was my dog. He had some minor medical issues that they helped resolve and I adopted him about two weeks later! After having Larry, I became more involved in the rescue community and then decided it was time for a second dog. We chose to go to Chicago Animal Care and Control to adopt a dog that was more at-risk and adopted our second dog, Frank.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter your dog came from. Anderson Animal Shelter (Larry), Chicago Animal Care and Control (Frank)

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? If I let the dogs choose, Larry would play fetch with me all day and Frank would sleep by my feet.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I'd tell them how much I love them and how much they have taught me about myself, empathy and service to others. They've opened up my heart in ways that I never thought possible and as a result I've also been able to develop more meaningful relationships with humans too.

What would be your dog's theme song? Mario Brothers

How does your pup make your life better? Same answer as two magic minutes! I'd also add that Frank inspired me to begin volunteering at Chicago Animal Care and Control and eventually starting my own non-profit with two other volunteers, Rescue Chicago, which supports the shelter in a number of much-needed ways. We also foster and love being able to save lives that way and help dogs be set up for success in their forever homes!

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? When you rescue a dog, you're not only adopting your best friend but you're also saving a life. So many dogs are killed in the Italy every year due to a multitude of reasons, and you can be a part of that solution but choosing to adopt a dog from your local shelter or rescue. So many rescue dogs are well-adjusted and have no issues (like Larry) and yes there are some that need extra work (like Frank) but all are worthy of your love and helping them feel safe and loved is more rewarding than anything else you'll ever experience. And if you're unsure, start by fostering!

Your dog's name: Pig

Your location: Milwaukee, WI

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? I've been a lifelong animal lover and have always loved the underdog. I was actually working at the Humane Society where I adopted my soulmate, Pig. For two years I saw firsthand how many dogs, particularly Pitbulls, ended up in shelters and rescues. I also saw firsthand the negative ramifications of irresponsible, inhumane, backyard breeding. Pitties with prolapsed vaginas from overbreeding; Pitties with ears hacked off with scissors, Pitties with open wounds, scars, sores and so much more. But one thing all of these babies had in common was that they forgave humans and just wanted to be loved, no matter the atrocities they endured.

How did you come to find your rescue dog and how did you know he/she was 'the one'? As I said, I worked at the Humane Society where I adopted Pig. In the two years I worked there I fell in love every day with a different dog. But, while I fell in love with them, I was also thrilled when they found the family they were meant to be with. But with Pig, I couldn’t bear thinking about another family taking him home. I watched families come to walk him and every time they got back in the lobby Pig would put on a show and "ham" it up to get belly rubs and kisses. I started walking Pig every chance I could. I would sit down on a park bench overlooking soccer fields and he would hop right up next to me and crawl onto my lap. I knew then, we were meant to be a family. I came to the Humane Society on a day I had off to put him on 'hold' until I could take him home the next day. But when I walked in, I saw another family was at the front putting him on hold. After they left, I took him on a walk and sat on our favorite park bench. He crawled onto my lap again and I sobbed. I had lost my chance. The next day at work everyone was somber and hoping that the family may change their mind. Hours passed slowly and they didn't show up. Finally the end of the day came and he was mine!! People always ask me how I chose his name, but he actually made the final decision. The final time we were sitting on that park bench before I took him home, I was trying out names for him. He was such a ham-bone I knew I wanted to name him something to do with pigs. He was looking away from me watching the soccer players as I called out names to see if he responded. He couldn’t have cared less about any of the names I tried! When I finally said, “Pig”, he turned around and walked right towards me! And the rest is history! I know everyone says their dog is special, and all dogs are of course! But, there is something about Pig that draws people in. He brings people together. He has become an avid brewery dog and an amazing advocate for his breed. He is a big ball of wonderful, clumsy energy! He is the love of my life, my best friend.

If applicable, please name the rescue/shelter (and location) your dog came from. Animal Humane Society - Twin Cities

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? My favorite activity to do with Pig is go hiking! We have been hiking buddies from the beginning. I always like to check out new trails with him and let him explore his surroundings! We've been through forests, and rivers, field and lakes! If we could have a perfect day, it would start by sleeping in and getting in a good cuddle in the morning. Then, we'd go for a fall hike through a beautiful forest surrounding a lake. After that, we'd stop by a local brewery to grab a beer and some dog treats of course!! Then, we'd retire back home for a bonfire and more cuddles!

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell him that I love him so much it hurts! I would tell him that every time I leave I wish I could bring him with me. I would ask him to stop jumping fences and eating parts of his toys, because while it's super fun for him, it's very expensive for me! I would tell him that for the rest our lives together I will do everything in my power to protect him. And finally, I would thank him for changing my life and being my best friend.

What would be your dog's theme song? Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus

How does your pup make your life better? Pig has brought so much joy into my life. He is my best friend, my life partner, my adventure buddy, and my confidant. He pushes me to explore new places, try new things, get outside, and laugh more. No day is dull with this nugget. He is goofy, silly, clumsy, and always ready to play. He constantly cracks me up. When I'm away from him I miss him. We are tethered together for life. I can't imagine my life without him.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? I want the world to know that rescuing a dog is challenging, difficult at times, and can be emotional. But, it is always life-changing, full of light, pure joy and so very worth it. Rescue dogs need you. There are thousands of sweet souls waiting to find their forever pack. Rescue dogs are resilient, forgiving and deserve all of the love! A misconception I'd love for people to understand is that no matter the age, a dog can ALWAYS learn new things. Consider adopting an adult dog or even a senior dog! I promise you, your life will be so full.

DOG's NAME: Roxy

LOCATION: Bonney Lake, Washington

How did you come to find your rescue dog? I had never had a dog before my husband and I adopted Roxy in May of 2017. When we made the decision to adopt, I left work three hours early to go ransack a pet store for supplies. I found her through a friend of a friend. She was the runt of her litter and had already gone through a couple of families by the time I met her. I knew that black dogs struggle the most with getting adopted from shelters, but when we took her to a daycare in Seattle to help socialize her, she was so friendly she was chosen to be one of the greeter dogs!

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Oh man! It would begin with Roxy waking us up for breakfast and then burrowing back under the covers for a couple of hours after she ate. Then we’d play with a squeaker tennis ball and go for a walk to find big sticks to drag home. We’d load up into the Jeep and go explore Mt. Rainier and have a picnic (only cheese would be served if Roxy was packing). We’d come home to cuddle up in front of the fire and watch Disney movies while Dad grills and finish the day by snuggling in bed.

How has your rescue dog made your life better? Roxy has taught me patience. She loves to travel in the mountains and goes everywhere we go. She loves snow. She brings us so much joy, she’s such a goofball! Fun fact: Roxy is afraid of laundry and plastic bags.

What made you decide to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one)? When we started to talk about getting a dog we knew we didn’t want to buy one. There are so many amazing dogs in shelters that need homes and we wanted to do our part to by helping a dog in need.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I would tell her thank you for letting us be your parents and for teaching me patience. Thank you for snuggles on cold nights or when we’re sad and for getting us out to explore but please stop barking every time you hear something outside and drooling so much when we eat. We love you!

What would be your dog's theme song? “Born To Be Wild” by Steppenwolf

How did you first get discover ecigsforabetterlife? When I first adopted Roxy, I wanted to get her some apparel and that's when I first came across the Gentle Pit. Olive and Petal are two of my favorite creatures. I loves GP’s mission and the fact that they give back to the rescue community. I really hope that through social platforms like the Gentle Pit, word can be spread. BSL is absolutely absurd.

She has a unique insight into the experience of dog rescue and has seen first hand the effects of the shelter system on dogs, but also the wonderful impact that a rescue dog can make in the lives in their new forever family.

NAME: Lauren & Eric Green

DOG(S) NAME: Tiny

LOCATION: Seattle, Washington

How did you come to find your rescue dog? I saw Tiny at a big adoption event in Los Angeles. I had no intention of adopting, I was just there to say 'hi' and make donations.

At the end of the second day, when the event was shutting down I saw Tiny being moved to the truck to head back to the shelter and I knew I had to do something. I called my husband and told him I was bringing a dog home!

Eric wasn't at the event with me when I adopted Tiny. We had no intention of adopting a dog while still living in our little condo, but the second they met could only be described as the kind of magical kismet you see in the likes of The Notebook. Tiny and Eric have been inseparable ever since. I had to quickly accept my position as third wheel, but I'm happy to have played Cupid in connecting their twin flames.

What made you decide to rescue a dog as opposed to buying one? To be completely transparent, growing up my family always had a dog and it was always a dog my parents bought from a breeder.

My parents were raised under the school of thought that you know exactly what you're getting when you buy a dog from a breeder. It wasn't until I was in high school my neighbor adopted a pit bull from a local rescue and I started doing my own research and began educating myself about how important it is to adopt from a shelter or rescue, debunking the myth that you somehow get a superior pet if you buy her/him. It's quite the opposite actually. And not to worry, my parents are now shelter/rescue advocates proving the impact a little bit of education can make. (They actually recently adopted a bully breed pup!)

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Tiny's a superstar traveler! Wherever we go, she goes, so she's been nearly everywhere along the west coast. But since we're still pretty new to Washginton having moved from Los Angeles just a few months ago, this special day might have to include some touristy stops for the scrapbook like Pike Place Market, the Freemont Troll and every filming location of the iconic 10 Things I Hate About You.

There is a little lake near our house that Tiny loves, so we for sure would have to go there! She's a super mellow senior, so she's not into swimming or long walks, but she likes to cuddle on a picnic blanket and people watch while sharing snacks.

After all that excitement, we would come home for cuddles on the couch as we catch up with The Bachelorette (Tiny's favorite)!

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? I think she already knows this, but we would want to tell Tiny how special she has made our lives and while we don't know what the first 9+ years of her life were like, we will stop at nothing to ensure she has nothing less than the sparkliest golden years. She gives our family everything we never knew we needed, and now we can't imagine ever living without. She is our family, she is love and she is so loved.

What would be your dog's theme song? I want to say Elton John's Tiny Dancer for obvious reasons, but really it would have to be Beyonce's Diva because, well, she can be a bit of a diva sometimes.

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? I can go on for days about this, but for starters I would say when you're considering welcoming a dog to your family, do your research. Like anything in life, once you know better, you do better.

Once you know the negative impacts buying a dog from a breeder has and the often inhumane practices breeders use just to make a buck, I would like to hope it would be enough to encourage most people to adopt from a shelter or rescue. An adopted dog comes to you up-to-date on vaccines and is spayed/neutered and microchipped, so just with those few important factors, you know more about a shelter/rescue dog than you ever would a dog from a breeder.

I think a lot of folks who are looking to welcome a dog to their family typically have a specific breed in mind, which leads them to buying from breeders. In the same amount of time one takes to conduct a simple internet search for a specific breed of dog to buy, they could just as easily do that same amount of research and find that exact breed of dog in a local shelter or even at a breed-specific rescue. A great resource to start your breed-specific search is petharbor.com

It's unfortunate, but animal rescues can often get a bad rap for requiring lengthy adoption applications and conducting overly invasive adopter screenings. And while each rescue organization can screen adopters as they see fit, I strongly encourage potential adopters not to give up if they run into some adoption hurdles. Go directly to the local city or county animal shelter, check out other rescues (there are TONS!) Just don't give up because there is a dog whose life is on the line waiting for you. And trust me, the rumors are true: There is no love that compares to the love of a rescue/shelter pet. You save their life and they save yours.

As a direct result of the tireless work that RDBLS put in over the past 3 years, on November 3rd, 2020, the residence of Denver successfully voted to overturn the archaic and ineffective breed ban law that had been in place in Denver for over 30 years. Thanks to Quinn and her team, Pitbulls can once again live safely in Denver under new responsible ownership laws. We are so proud to share a little bit more of Quinn's Rescue Story with you.

NAME: Quinn Pigott

DOG'S NAMES: Lilo & Penny

LOCATION : Denver, Colorado

How did you come to find your rescue dog(s): I rescued Lilo, my Pittie/Doxin mix, in Chicago. My friend was fostering her so I scooped her up! When moving to Denver, I was unaware of the BSL in place there and immediately wanted to get involved with making a change. I thought, 'If no one is doing something about it, I have to do something.' I wanted to make a change.

My second rescue, Penny, was a foster fail in Denver. Penny was in a shelter that was closing down, and the animals were in line to be euthanized. No-kill shelters were overpopulated, and I spent hours volunteering to help walk the dogs. That’s where I met Penny. Penny was terrified and wouldn’t leave the corner of the cage, so I brought her home and she never went back to the shelter!

If you and your pup had an entire day to do only fun things together, what would your day look like? Lilo, Penny and I (or the girls as I like to call them!) would go hiking! Hands down our most favorite thing to do. Drive to the mountains with all the windows down, music blasting, sun shining and then make our way through the woods to the top of a mountain (preferably with a lake!). I always bring a good book and snacks for us. Then, head back down, grab some amazing food and beers, head home for snuggles and movie night.

Why was it important for you to rescue a dog (as opposed to buying one): Growing up we had lots of animals in the house (dogs, cats, birds, fish) and my grandma was always rescuing and saving all the animals! For holidays, she would adopt a whale, save the rainforest always in our names. I was brought up to take care of 'God's Creatures' (as my grandma put it) whether that was our planet or these animals. When it was time for me to get my first pet, there was no question in my mind it would be a rescue.

If you had two magic minutes where your dog could understand everything you said, what would you tell her/him? That when I leave whether it is the house, going on vacation or just outside the coffee shop I will ALWAYS come back hahaha

What would be your dog's theme song? When they have the zoomies it's totally 'Who Let the Dogs Out' by Maha Man! But Penny was named after the song 'Penny Lane' by the Beatles

What do you want the world to know about rescuing a dog? You may be rescuing them, but they rescue you right back! It is such a rewarding and loving experience.

]]>
2020 redefined what ‘home’ meant for most of us. For many, home went from being a place where we chose to be, to a place where we had to be. For some, home became the place they wanted to be the least. Some of you may not even have a home to call your own right now; however, if you’re here reading this, it’s probably safe assume that like me, your definition of home - wherever you are - includes a rescue dog.

Today we are kicking off a new ongoing series called Rescue Stories. In this series we will share your stories. The stories of how your family expanded the day you rescued your shelter pup and how you helped give a home to another living thing in need of one.

To launch this series we sent our Gentle Pit photographer, Madison, on the road. She visited the hometowns of some of our long-time TGP supporters, including one Pitbull advocate who is making a different in the lives of shelter dogs in Denver. She got to see their hometowns, meet their rescue pups and hear the stories of how they've made a home and a life with their adopted fur children.

Madison also came with me and my rescue dogs to my hometown of Corvallis, Montana, where I grew up on our multi-generational family farm. It took me years to fully appreciate the home of my childhood. Growing up on a farm in rural Montana, I could not wait to get out and explore the world. But, now that I have the advantage of hindsight, I can see that Montana will always be my true home. It's where my love for animals began and where I feel the most like myself, surrounded by my family and their rescue dogs.

Maybe for you the idea of home isn’t a good one. Maybe it brings up painful or traumatic emotions. For those who haven’t had the privilege of thinking of their home in a positive light, if you choose or have chosen to rescue a dog, maybe this is where your shared stories can come together and heal, as you begin to rewrite what home means to you, together. I believe animal companionship can do this and I also believe when you have a rescue dog, you'll always have 'home' with you.

Thank you for being a part of our community. We can't wait to hear your Rescue Story.
